Anthropic has released Claude for Google Workspace, a sidebar add-on that works inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, 9to5Google reported Tuesday. The public beta is open to all paid Claude subscribers through the Google Workspace Marketplace, and new connectors let users work on the same files from Claude's own interface.

What Happened

Once installed, Claude sits in a panel next to the open file and can read it, pick up on text the user has selected and change the document directly. In Docs, 9to5Google said, it can correct spelling, rewrite passages and restyle whole sections without breaking existing formatting. VentureBeat, which also covered the launch, said small changes to sentences or headings land in place, while bigger rewrites show up as proposed edits for the user to review.

In Sheets, the assistant writes formulas and builds tables from what is already in the workbook, and users can upload other files to start new sheets. VentureBeat listed pivot tables, native charts and new tabs among its abilities, along with pulling cell ranges into Python to join or clean data before writing the results back.

In Slides, Claude creates new slides that reuse the deck's existing layouts and themes and points out elements that need attention. VentureBeat said it checks its own output for overlapping objects, content running past slide boundaries and text that is hard to read.

By default the add-on runs in an "Ask before edits" mode, so changes are previewed before they are applied. Users who want it to work on its own can switch to "Accept all edits."

Why It Matters

The release also runs in the other direction. Separate Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors let a user paste a Google file link into a Claude conversation and edit the file there, or start in Claude and create Google files from it. On Team and Enterprise plans, owners have to switch those connectors on.

For IT departments, VentureBeat reported, administrators can push the add-on to an entire domain or only to selected groups. What Claude can open is governed by each file's existing Google sharing settings, and Anthropic's Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit exports cover the integration. Claude's other connectors and Skills are reachable from the Workspace sidebar too, so a user could, for example, build a deck that draws on customer history in Salesforce as well as documents in Drive.

No separate price was announced; the add-on is included in existing paid plans.

Partner and Rival

The move puts Anthropic directly inside a product suite whose owner sells its own assistant. Google already builds Gemini throughout Workspace with overlapping features, and 9to5Google framed the add-on as an option mainly for people who have already settled on Claude.

The picture is more tangled on the Microsoft side. VentureBeat noted that Copilot's agentic features in Office, which take multistep actions inside files, use Anthropic models, making Anthropic both a supplier to and a competitor of the suite vendors. Anthropic's own Claude for Microsoft Office add-ins for Word, Excel and PowerPoint are generally available, with the Outlook version still in beta, according to VentureBeat.

What to Watch

Anthropic has not said when the Workspace add-on will leave beta or whether its features will change before then. Signs of uptake will include how many Enterprise administrators deploy it across whole domains rather than leaving it to individual installs, and whether Google responds by giving Gemini in Workspace features that close the gap on spreadsheet analysis and slide generation.
