Cloudflare has launched cf, a new command-line tool designed to be used by AI coding agents as much as by people, the company said in a blog post Monday. The tool covers the company's full API and is set to replace Wrangler, its long-standing developer CLI, which will move into a maintenance period once cf leaves beta.

What Happened

Where Wrangler offers about 280 command paths, cf exposes more than 3,000 operations spanning the whole Cloudflare API, according to the post by Matt Taylor. Cloudflare builds the commands automatically from its OpenAPI schemas using Forge, an SDK generator it has open-sourced, so new API features can appear in the CLI without being hand-written.

JSON is the default output. The tool pretty-prints it when a human is at the terminal and emits a compact form for agents to save tokens; with Wrangler, agents had to add a --json flag and often pipe results through jq.

Project configuration moves from TOML or JSONC files to a type-checked cloudflare.config.ts, with editor support through the Language Server Protocol and helper functions for bindings and triggers such as routes, queues, schedules and email. Cloudflare said the switch shrank some of its own internal Workers' configuration files by 40%. Vite replaces esbuild as the default build tool, bringing hot module replacement.

Other features include cf cli search, which lets an agent find the right operation with a natural-language query, binding helpers for services including KV, D1, R2, Queues, Workers AI and Vectorize, and cf migrate, which converts existing Wrangler projects. The tool is in open beta, installable from npm, and its source is on GitHub.

Why It Matters

Cloudflare's own numbers explain the redesign. Agents were responsible for 25% of Wrangler usage in March 2026, up from single digits a year earlier, and reached 48% in the week before the launch, the company said. Agents also use nearly twice as many distinct commands per day as human developers and are four times as likely to use six or more.

That usage pattern breaks assumptions built into traditional CLIs, which were written for people reading colored terminal output and remembering a limited set of commands. An agent is better served by exhaustive coverage, machine-readable output by default, and a way to discover commands on demand. Cloudflare is effectively treating its CLI as another API client, generated from the same schema as its SDKs.

The Wrangler Transition

Cloudflare plans a final major version of Wrangler that directs users to cf once the beta ends. Wrangler will then receive 18 months of maintenance support. For teams with CI pipelines, scripts and documentation built around Wrangler commands and wrangler.toml, that sets a timeline for migration, with cf migrate as the intended path.

What to Watch

The key questions are how long the open beta runs, how smoothly cf migrate handles complex existing projects, and whether other cloud and developer platforms follow with schema-generated, agent-oriented CLIs of their own. The end of the beta will also start the 18-month maintenance clock on Wrangler.
