South Korea's Doosan Enerbility shipped a 380-megawatt gas turbine to SpaceXAI Tuesday local time, its first gas turbine export to the United States, Seoul Economic Daily reported Tuesday. The unit will be used in an energy infrastructure project SpaceXAI is building in the U.S. to supply power for data centers.
What Happened
The turbine, a DGT6-300H S2 model, was built at Doosan's headquarters plant in Changwon in southeastern Korea, where the company held a shipment ceremony. About 70 people attended, including SpaceXAI officials and Son Seung-woo, who heads Doosan's Power Service Business Group, according to The Elec. Doosan built the unit to SpaceXAI's technical specifications, the outlet reported.
Son said that entering the supply chain of a global AI company demonstrates the technology and quality of Korean gas turbines. The Korea Times described SpaceXAI as the AI arm of Elon Musk's SpaceX.
Doosan has signed contracts to supply 12 gas turbines to U.S. companies, including SpaceXAI, according to Seoul Economic Daily. Industry estimates cited by the paper put about five of those units with SpaceXAI. Contract values and signing dates were not disclosed.
Why It Matters
AI data centers need large amounts of steady power, and many developers are building their own generation rather than waiting for grid connections, which can take years in parts of the U.S. Gas turbines are a common choice because they can be installed relatively quickly and run around the clock.
That demand has strained the market for large turbines, which has long been dominated by a small group of manufacturers, including GE Vernova, Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Power, whose order books have stretched out as data center demand has climbed. The squeeze has opened room for other suppliers, and Doosan's U.S. orders show a Korean manufacturer winning business from AI infrastructure builders.
For Doosan, the order is also a test of its own technology. The company localized large gas turbine technology in 2019, becoming the fifth company in the world to do so, according to Seoul Economic Daily.
Context
Doosan said it plans to expand cooperation with global technology companies as demand for power generation equipment for AI infrastructure grows, and its leadership pledged to accelerate its push into North America. The company has not said which other U.S. customers make up the rest of its 12-turbine order book.
The reports did not say where the turbine will be installed or how much generating capacity the overall SpaceXAI project will have.
What to Watch
Key questions include the delivery timeline for Doosan's remaining U.S. turbines, the location and total size of the SpaceXAI power project, and whether Doosan wins further orders from U.S. technology companies. Any disclosure of contract values would also show how much the AI power buildout is adding to Doosan's revenue.
