OpenAI used its DevDay event Tuesday to introduce Space, a shared ChatGPT workspace, along with a document format called Pages and a collaborative slide tool, a combination that amounts to a productivity suite built around AI agents, TechCrunch reported Tuesday. The launch pushes OpenAI further into territory long held by Microsoft, one of its biggest backers.
What Happened
Space is designed as a place where colleagues, ChatGPT and AI agents work on the same material. Chief executive Sam Altman compared it to a drive in which pages and files sit together, but said that "spaces feel alive" because pages can carry standing instructions. His example was a page told to check a team channel and update itself with what it finds.
Pages is the document layer. OpenAI describes it as a new kind of document built for people and agents to edit together, supporting writing, research, charts, generated images and data visualizations. Several employees with edit rights can work on the same page at once, each through their own ChatGPT session, according to VentureBeat, which also reported that pages can draw context from connected services such as Google Drive and Slack. Users can tag ChatGPT or one of OpenAI's new agent personas, called Dots, inside a document to hand off work.
The slide tool lets a user build a presentation by talking through its content in ChatGPT, after which several people and agents can edit and comment on the deck together. VentureBeat said collaborative slides and spreadsheets are both labeled as coming soon.
Space replaces ChatGPT's existing Library feature for Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers, VentureBeat reported. The Dots beta is open to Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare customers once an administrator switches it on, and the first Dot is included at no extra charge for Pro and Business Premium plans. TechCrunch's report did not include pricing or a firm availability date for the suite as a whole.
Why It Matters
Word processing and presentations are the core of Microsoft's Office business, and Microsoft has spent the past two years threading its Copilot assistant through Word, PowerPoint and Teams. OpenAI's move turns a partner and investor into a more direct rival for the same enterprise seats. TechCrunch noted that Microsoft and Salesforce are both building AI products aimed at blunting OpenAI's advances, and Pages is also pitched squarely at Google Docs users.
The design also shifts where agents live. Rather than an assistant bolted onto an existing editor, pages in Space can be assigned ongoing jobs, which makes the document itself a place where automated work happens between human edits.
How Sharing and Privacy Work
VentureBeat's account of the governance model is likely to draw the closest reading from IT teams. A workspace administrator's existing sharing rules carry over, and page owners can grant view or edit rights and later change or revoke them. Files uploaded directly to a page inherit its permissions, while links to outside files do not grant access on their own.
Sharing a page does not expose a user's private ChatGPT conversations or memory to colleagues. The exception is content ChatGPT itself draws from personal memory while writing on a shared page; once it lands there, every collaborator can see it. Anything a user copies onto a shared page is likewise visible to the group.
What to Watch
The unreleased spreadsheet and full slide collaboration features will determine whether Space can stand in for a complete office suite or remains a companion to one. Pricing for additional and specialist Dots has not been disclosed. The larger question is how enterprises that already pay for Microsoft 365 Copilot or Google Workspace weigh a third option, particularly around data handling rules such as the memory behavior on shared pages.
