SoftBank Group has finished paying in its $30 billion investment in OpenAI from the AI company's latest funding round, bringing its total stake to about 13%, Investing.com reported Thursday. The Japanese investor also canceled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity on a $40 billion bridge loan it took out earlier this year.
What Happened
SoftBank made the investment in three tranches of $10 billion each through its Vision Fund 2 vehicle, according to the report. With the final installment, its cumulative investment in OpenAI stands at $64.6 billion.
OpenAI's latest round drew $122 billion in total commitments at a valuation of $852 billion. Amazon and Nvidia were among the other investors alongside SoftBank.
SoftBank raised part of the money for the final payment through $11.1 billion of high-yield bonds sold last month. With that tranche funded, it no longer needs the last $10 billion it could have drawn from the bridge loan and has canceled that capacity.
SoftBank shares were down 5.83% at the time of the Investing.com report.
Why It Matters
The completion closes out one of the largest single commitments in the AI funding boom and leaves SoftBank as one of OpenAI's biggest outside shareholders. At the round's $852 billion valuation, a 13% stake would be worth roughly $110 billion on paper, well above the $64.6 billion SoftBank has put in, although that value depends on a private-market price that has not been tested by a sale.
The financing choices matter for SoftBank's balance sheet. Founder Masayoshi Son has repositioned the group as a leading AI investor, and that strategy has leaned on borrowing. Funding the last payment with longer-dated bonds, and then canceling the unused part of the bridge loan, means SoftBank is no longer holding a short-term credit line it does not need.
Context
The Primary Wire reported last week that SoftBank's shares jumped after it sold the $11.1 billion of dollar- and euro-denominated bonds. A SoftBank filing cited by Reuters at the time said the proceeds would help fund the final $10 billion tranche of the OpenAI commitment, and that its total investment would reach $64.6 billion once the payment was complete. Thursday's report confirms that the money has now been deployed as planned.
SoftBank has long pointed to its loan-to-value ratio, which compares net debt with the value of its holdings, as the main gauge of its financial discipline. Large positions in a single private company such as OpenAI make that ratio more sensitive to how the company is valued.
What to Watch
Watch whether SoftBank takes part in any further OpenAI fundraising and how it would pay for a new commitment after the bond sale. Investors will also look for an updated loan-to-value figure in SoftBank's next earnings report, which will show how the completed OpenAI position and the new bonds have changed the group's leverage.
