TikTok has introduced a conversational AI shopping assistant and a one-click checkout that lets users buy from brands without leaving the For You feed, TechCrunch reported Monday. The features, announced the same day, extend TikTok's shopping tools beyond TikTok Shop, its in-house marketplace, and into the app's main video stream.
What Happened
The new Shopping Assistant is an AI agent that users can talk to while browsing products. According to TechCrunch, it keeps track of what a user has said during a conversation, remembers stated preferences, and gives real-time answers about product details, shipping, sizing and availability. It can also guide a user through completing a purchase.
The second feature is a native checkout. Users who see a brand's product in the For You feed can buy it directly from that brand with one click, rather than following a link to an outside website.
TikTok built the features with commerce partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. TechCrunch did not report a rollout schedule or say which countries will get the tools first.
Why It Matters
Until now, most purchases on TikTok have run through TikTok Shop, a marketplace where sellers list products inside the app. The new checkout ties shopping to brands' own listings shown in the regular feed, which widens the range of merchants whose products can be bought without leaving TikTok. Partnering with Shopify and Salesforce, whose software powers many brands' online stores, points to that broader pool of sellers.
The assistant is also a defensive move. TechCrunch noted that TikTok appears to want users to ask product questions inside its app instead of turning to outside chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. AI assistants have become a new starting point for product research, and platforms that host the moment of discovery have an incentive to keep the follow-up questions, and the sale, in-house.
The commercial stakes are significant. TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, roughly 18% of U.S. social commerce, according to estimates from eMarketer. TikTok Shop launched in the United States in September 2023.
Context
TikTok has been building a case for its economic role in the United States. In an economic impact report released last week, the company said the platform helped generate $81 billion in gross domestic product for U.S. businesses and that 54 million Americans bought something after watching a TikTok video. Those are the company's own figures.
The launch puts TikTok in a growing contest over so-called agentic commerce, in which an AI assistant helps a shopper find, compare and buy products in a single conversation. Retailers, payment companies and AI developers are all competing to handle that flow, and TikTok is relying on partners such as Stripe for the payment side.
What to Watch
Key details remain unclear, including how widely the features are available at launch, whether the assistant works across all product categories and how brands are charged for sales through the new checkout. Usage data, if TikTok releases it, would show whether people are willing to ask a video app's assistant the questions they might otherwise type into a general-purpose chatbot.
Merchant uptake through partners such as Shopify will also indicate whether the one-click checkout becomes a meaningful sales channel alongside TikTok Shop.
