What Happened

Microsoft posted a 30-day reminder to its Windows message center on Oct. 9 saying that Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise and Education reach end of updates on Nov. 10, 2026. The November 2026 security update will be the last one for those editions. Earlier reminders came on Aug. 12 and Sept. 15. Microsoft recommends Windows 11 25H2, which receives Enterprise and Education updates until Oct. 10, 2028.

BleepingComputer, which reported the reminder Monday, said the IoT Enterprise edition of 23H2 is also affected. Microsoft gives Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise editions 36 months of servicing per release, compared with 24 months for Home and Pro. Home and Pro editions of 23H2 lost support in November 2025.

Why It Matters

A 23H2 device that misses the deadline keeps working but accumulates unpatched vulnerabilities. IT teams need an inventory of affected machines, including point-of-sale terminals, lab PCs and embedded systems. Organizations subject to security frameworks or cyber insurance requirements may face audit or underwriting questions about unsupported devices.

BleepingComputer noted that Windows 11 26H2 became generally available in September as an enablement package and is rolling out in phases.

Related Deadlines

Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of support this month, while 24H2 Enterprise and Education are supported until October 2027, according to BleepingComputer, which also reported that Microsoft extended free Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 home users to October 2027.

In an Oct. 8 notice, Microsoft said the certificates behind Windows Update expire May 17 and June 19, 2027. Devices must have the replacement certificates to keep receiving updates, and devices on unsupported Windows versions will lose security updates after that rotation, BleepingComputer reported.

What to Watch

Key dates include the final 23H2 Enterprise and Education security update on Nov. 10 and the certificate deadlines of May 17 and June 19, 2027. IT teams will also be watching for further Microsoft guidance on IoT Enterprise devices and for the phased rollout of 26H2 as they choose between it and 25H2 as an upgrade target.
